FETAL ULTRASOUND PREP
3D/4D Ultrasound Prep
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Try to drink close to a gallon a day.
Hydration with water is essential! Amniotic fluid levels are the most important component to optimizing your 3/4D ultrasound. Your increased water intake will help your amniotic fluid levels, which will result in better imaging.
Have a juice or snack 10 minutes prior to the appointment.
We want the baby awake for the exam.
1st Trimester Ultrasound (6-14 Weeks) Prep
- For ultrasounds 6-10 weeks: Please drink 24 oz of water 30 minutes before the appointment.
- For ultrasounds 11-14 weeks: Please drink 16 oz of water 30 minutes before the appointment.
Tip: Have a juice or snack 10 minutes prior to the appointment.

Diagnostic Fetal Ultrasound Prep
- For 15-39 weeks, filling your bladder is not necessary, but please do not empty it 20 minutes before the ultrasound.

ULTRASOUND SCREENING PREP
Abdomen Ultrasound Screen Prep
- Requires a 6-8 hour fast.
- Taking medication and drinking water are allowed.
- No coffee with sugar or creamer.
Aortic Ultrasound Screen Prep
- Requires a 6-8 hour fast.
- Taking medication and drinking water are allowed.
- No coffee with sugar or creamer.
Pelvic Ultrasound Screen Prep
Bladder Prep:
- You will need to finish drinking 32 oz of water prior to your appointment.
The pelvic screen includes endovaginal imaging, which does not require a bladder prep.
The bladder prep is required for the transabdominal pelvic ultrasound. This is reserved for patients declining the endovaginal exam, non-sexually active women, or pediatric patients.
Thyroid, Carotid, and Soft Tissue Screen Prep
No prep required.
